Gifted & Talented Speaker Series Event
HISD’s Advanced Academics department is presenting the first “G/T Speaker Series” event for parents of gifted and talented students. Dr. Richard Olenchak will present:
Gifted is More than Academic:
The Importance of Meeting Social-Emotional Needs
6-7 pm Wednesday, November 3, 2010
Board Auditorium at the
Hattie Mae White Education Support Center.
This session is aimed primarily at parents. Moving from what powerful research studies tell us about the huge impact social and emotional development has on cognitive success, participants will learn about an array of strategies they can use at home to reinforce the social and emotional adjustment of their children. Dr. Olenchak currently serves as Professor, Psychologist, and Co-Director of the Urban Talent Research Institute at the University of Houston. He joined the faculty at the University of Houston in 1999 and was previously Chair of Special Education and Director of Teacher Education at the University of Alabama for eleven years. His Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, emphasizing Giftedness and Talent Development, was completed at the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented at the University of Connecticut. Flyers promoting this event will be sent home within the next couple of weeks.
