Yearbook

Yearbook is a year-long credit course in which students assume the entrepreneurship of a business - serving as photographer and editor while managing budget, time lines, advertisement, sales, layout, etc. Any CVHS student may take the class.

Student Council

Juan Garner

Student Council sponsors activities to stimulate campus life. Students in each grade elect one boy and one girl as their class representatives on the council.

Ramon Moss

Students meet monthly with the principal to discuss campus wide issues.  The principal selects sixteen students who represent a diverse and demographic representation of the school.

National Honor Society

Amalia Alcoriza

Members of the National Honor Society exemplify the four tenets of the organization: scholarship, leadership, character and service. Members of the CVHS chapter of NHS are juniors and seniors with a GPA of 4.0 or higher who are chosen on the basis of a written application and essay completed in the fall. Annual dues and maintenance of a 4.0 GPA are required for continued membership. Members provide on-campus tutoring to fellow students and conduct service projects throughout the school year.

Junior Statesmen of America

The students meet weekly to participate in political debates and discussions. Three times a year the students have an opportunity to meet with other JSA chapters and participate in debates at state conventions. To join a student must attend regular Thursday meetings. Dues are $10 per year and any CVHS student may join.

Thespian Society

The Thespian Society performs two plays per year and presents a student festival of original plays in the spring. Membership is open to all CVHS students. Dues are $6.00 per year and meetings are held on Wednesdays during lunch as needed.

Robotics Club

Robotics Club is a student-directed competitive building activity dealing with the construction and programming of robots. Members enter multi-school competition events that require that any robot entered be able to independently complete a set series of tasks.

The Foreign Language Club is open to all CVHS students.
Together with the French classes, the club is organizing a French fair during national French week (11/5 to 11/11). The Club is also working on raising money for the spring break Spain/France trip. This year the club will participate in the French national contest and the Texas French Symposium in the Woodlands. The Foreign Language Club actively raises money for the different trips that are scheduled as well as having fun! Dues for this year are $10.

Salsa Club

The Salsa Club teaches any student the basics of salsa and
develops their talents into the more advance levels of spins,
footwork, and choreography. Students will be invited to
participate in competitions throughout Houston and Texas.
Practices are after school Wednesday and Friday.

Junior Classical League

Junior Classical League is open to any student interested in
Classical civilization (not just Latin students). In addition to
Foreign Language Club Activities, in the spring JCL competes at Regional and State events in a variety of Classical topics and activities. Junior Classical League has something for everyone. We also observe significant events in Roman history and culture through the school year.

Spanish Honor Society

The purpose of the Spanish National Honor Society is to
recognize high student achievement in Spanish and Portuguese and to promote a continuity of interest in Hispanic Studies. Our chapter, the Carlos Gardel chapter, is the first chapter of the Spanish National Honor Society at CVHS. To qualify for the SNHS Carnegie students must have at least a B in their core courses at the time of induction and must have completed level 2 of Spanish.

Speech and Debate Club

The Speech and Debate Club is open to all interested students. Meetings are held Tuesdays (and sometimes also on Thursdays - when we're getting ready for a competition). Dues are $6. Meetings are typically held during the first half of lunch.

Service Club

Meetings are held on Mondays. This club coordinates students and community organization events so that they can easily meet their hourly requirements before graduation. Meetings are typically held during the first half of lunch.

Chess Club

Students meet during lunch when time is available to play chess.

Houston Area Model United Nations (HAMUN)

Students role-play as members of the United Nations.
Participants pay a $20 fee for the HAMUN conference, which
is held on the campus of the University of Houston in February. Any CVHS student can join.

FISH Camp

FISH Camp is a two-night freshmen orientation program held at Camp Cullen in Trinity, Texas on Lake Livingston (students leave Thursday around noon and return Saturday around 3:30 p.m. the weekend before school starts). Students participate in Low and High Ropes plus fun activities designed for team building. Activities are geared for freshmen to get to know their fellow classmates before school starts on the following Monday. Senior and Junior CVHS students act as counselors whose purpose is to help the incoming freshmen know what to expect during their next four years at CVHS. The ropes courses are supervised by counselors hired by Camp Cullen. Cost per student is between $100 - $125 after the CVHS PTO underwrites certain costs (camp and transportation).

Faculty members work with the senior class to decide upon and organize senior class activities, such as senior shirts, senior prom and senior breakfast.

Odyssey of the Mind

The Odyssey of the Mind is a competition that requires students to use their creativity to solve problems. Every problem appeals to students at all levels and with different interests. Students form teams, choose a problem and participate in nationwide as well as worldwide competitions.

Puzzle Club

James Barnes

Puzzle Club meets every Tuesday during lunch. Students solve puzzles and play interesting games (board games, card games) that foster problem solving and higher level thinking.

Checkers Club

Checkers Club meets every Friday during lunch. Students play checkers and socialize.

Photography Club

Students interested in the Photography Club should speak with Ms. Davis regarding eligibility criteria.

UIL Academic Competitions

UIL academics includes 22 different events in areas from one act play to mathematics. Mr. Jonas is the coordinator and sponsors 7 of the individual events. Students are recruited and sponsored by different teachers in different events. The district meet is in late March. There are preparatory practice meets this year. Students must meet UIL eligibility rules to participate.

Baseball (UIL)

UIL Baseball will begin in the spring and will be open to all
CVHS students. 2007 we will play a Junior Varsity schedule in District 20 AAAAA. Students must attend all practices and
maintain an average of 75 in all classes to play in games.
Students and/or parents are responsible for transportation.

Cross Country/Track Club

Students interested in participating in cross country during the fall and track during the spring should speak with Ms. Davis regarding practice times.

Soccer Club

Abderahman Lamane

Soccer is a student-powered club that practices after school
every day. Girls and boys teams practice together. Any CVHS
student is welcome to participate. Games are scheduled by
students and held after school. Students provide their own
transportation and arrange uniforms at a cost of about $40.

Volleyball (UIL)

Volleyball is a UIL sport. We play a Varsity schedule in
District 20 AAAAA. Students must meet academic eligibility
standards. In order to try out or participate students must have a physical, notarized parent approval, and either a waiver form on record or purchase school insurance. They must also be enrolled in the athletics period. If they make the team after tryouts they are committed to five and sometimes six days a week. There are three practice sessions a week from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. Two other days a week the team has scheduled matches. In addition there may be up to three tournaments requiring play on Saturdays.

Optional Lunch Activities: volleyball, rugby, soccer, library, basketball

*Clubs are formed and remain active based on student interest. Any student wishing to start a club or student activity may recruit a faculty sponsor and organize a group. Most clubs meet during the hour-long lunch period on a regular basis established by the student leadership and the sponsor. Multi-school student competitions usually take place after school and on weekends. Sports activities take place after school and on weekends.
