A Few Achievements

Carnegie Vanguard High School is a special place for your gifted and talented student to prepare for college.

Here are just a few of our students' achievements:

Carnegie Vanguard High School had the highest reported SAT scores in HISD, and was among the highest in TAKS scores as well. CVHS' first graduating class (2003) tied for the highest average composite SAT score in HISD. Carnegie's average SAT score for 2004 was almost 100 points higher than in 2003. In addition, Carngie students perform well on Advanced Placement exams. In November 2005, the Houston Chronicle reported Carnegie Vanguard first in terms of the Houston-area high school with the highest percentage of students graduating with college credit by way of attaining a score of 3 or better on an AP exam.

Carnegie Vanguard High School's first two years of existence featured a higher percentage of National Merit Scholars per capita than any school in HISD.

In the Spring of 2004, Carnegie Vanguard High School teacher Gail Bromiley was honored in Washington, D.C. as one of the Top Ten Teachers in the United States. Our principal, Mr. Ramon Moss, has been selected as Outstanding Region 4 Principal of the Year for HISD's South Region for 2006.

Carnegie Vanguard High School sent a team of students to the International Space Settlement Design Competition in Florida in July 2004 - one of only eight schools in the world to qualify for the final round of this competition.

In the last three years, Carnegie Vanguard High School students have received acceptances and/or scholarship offers from Cambridge, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown, Penn, Berkeley, MIT, Rice, Carnegie-Mellon, Rhode Island School of Design, Mt. Holyoke, Bryn Mawr, Grinnell, Oberlin, Antioch, Pomona, Southwestern, Trinity, and many distinguished universities

Carnegie Vanguard High School has an academic environment that is supportive and nurturing, rather than competitive and cutthroat, where students encourage each other and learn together rather than searching for every competitive advantage; and where students thrive in a family atmosphere that celebrates the successes of others, rather than jealously fighting over a perceived scarcity of laurels.

Carnegie Vanguard High School has a social culture that embraces creativity, diversity, a sense of humor and tolerance. While high school is often a time of conformity, social pressure, and repression of individuality, Carnegie students are typically free-spirited, charmingly eccentric, and accepted by their peers for whoever they are.

Carnegie Vanguard High School is a place where students and teachers work together in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect, rather than out of resentment, hostility and a clash of wills. The challenge of working with Vanguard students is responding to creative, eccentric goofiness, rather than controlling and disciplining mean-spirited or criminal behavior. The faculty and staff realize this, and it enables them to operate a campus that has a different feel than most American high schools.

Carnegie Vanguard High School is the place where our most prized creations spend the majority of their waking hours. That alone makes it a special place.
