Carnegie Vanguard Dominates JSA State and Regional

Delegates from the Carnegie Vanguard High School chapter of the Junior Statesmen of America headed off to Dallas the weekend of February 9 for the annual Winter Congress Convention. The Junior Statesmen of America, "JSA" is a non-partisan student-run organization that addresses social issues and current events.

At the convention, the delegates separated into four Senate and House committees where they debated various pieces of student-written legislation. Topics ranged from fighting unethical legislation to changing the national anthem to the Star Wars theme song. Many Carnegie students submitted bills, debated them in their House or Senate committee, and some even got the chance to speak in front of the full House or Senate.

Carnegie student Michael Paras won two best speaker awards for his
impressive speeches on stem-cell research and water conservation. Carnegie also found success in another important arena of the convention, the Quiz Bowl. Sophie Perrault from Carnegie placed second in this challenging competition, which was devised by Quiz Bowl Master Eric Levy, also from Carnegie.

On Saturday, March 24, Carnegie JSA celebrated another success at the Gulf Coast Regional Convention, organized and run by Carnegie JSA chapter president Joshua Cantor-Stone. Students from throughout the Gulf Coast gathered at Rice University to debate hot topics such as Social Security and the HPV vaccination.   Carnegie's own Tim Vaughn walked away with a best speaker award and one of the Carnegie Quiz Bowl Teams, "Eric es Muy Caliente" won Quiz Bowl. The regional convention also gave students a chance to hear from some of the JSA candidates running for state positions, including Joshua Cantor-Stone who will be running for State Speaker of the House at the upcoming Spring State Convention here in Houston on the weekend of April 14.

The Junior Statesmen of America is sponsored at the school by long-time social studies teacher Andrew Dewey.  Carnegie Vanguard High School, a magnet school for gifted and talented students, is located at 10401 Scott Street in Houston.  For further information on the school, please check the website, www.vanguardian.org or call 713-732-3690.
