Record Number of HISD Schools Named to Prestigious State Honor Roll
September 08, 2008
The Texas Business and Education Coalition http://tbec.org/ (TBEC) released its 2008 list of Texas Honor Roll Schools on August 26 and 18 HISD schools are on the list. That's a new record for the district, which had 16 schools on the list last year and 14 the year before.
The TBEC Honor Roll recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. The TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state's most rigorous standard, "commended" performance, in every subject. Less than five percent of the more than 8,000 public schools in Texas earn the honor. This year only 298 Texas schools made the grade.
"The evidence continues to mount that what we are doing at HISD is working," said HISD Superintendent of Schools Abelardo Saavedra. "Earlier this month, we announced a record number of Exemplary and Recognized schools under the current Texas accountability system, and now there is this great news. HISD's valued-added system http://portal.battelleforkids.org/Aspire/Value-Added/VAResults.html?sflang=en, which utilizes a high-tech database to track the strengths and weaknesses of individual students, has allowed our schools to focus in on the individual needs of each student early enough to effectively intervene."
For 11 HISD schools, this is the second consecutive year on the honor roll, and seven schools have made honor roll for three consecutive years. This year's HISD Honor Roll Schools are:
- Bellaire High School
- Carnegie Vanguard High School
- Condit Elementary School
- Cornelius Elementary School
- De Zavala Elementary School
- DeBakey High School for Health Professions
- Eastwood Academy
- Energized for Excellence Middle School
- Kennedy Elementary School
- Kolter Elementary School
- Lanier Middle School
- Oates Elementary School
- Pin Oak Middle School
- T.H. Rogers Elementary School
- T.H. Rogers Middle School
- Twain Elementary School
- West University Elementary School
- White Elementary School
The schools will be recognized on November 10 in San Antonio at TBEC's 9th Annual Honor Roll Celebration.
