Community Service Opportunity This Saturday, October 21st, With The Park People!

Carnegie students, parents and staff are encouraged to participate in a special service project sponsored by The Park People this Saturday, October 21 at Tony Marron Park from 9:00 a.m.-12 noon.
 
The Park People is planting wildflowers and transplanting wetland plants in Tony Marron park (808 N. York Street).  The park is on the south side of Buffalo Bayou just east of downtown.  Student volunteers can earn service hours toward graduation.  The park has been renovated and replanted over the past year, transforming a space that was originally an industrial site used for parking oilfield service vehicles.  It now has soccer fields, a pavilion and picnic areas, and a water-play area with "interactive fountains".  The wildflower seed planting will be done along the banks of the bayou.  The wetland plants will create a wetland habitat in the swale carrying the water away from the play fountains into the bayou.  The Park People will provide coffee and donuts, gardening gloves and planting tools.
 
In support of this project, Ms. Matsu will be offering extra credit to biology students who participate.  Mr. Schenke will be offering "homework skip" credits.  Other teachers may be offering similar incentives.  Go to www.parkpeople.org for more details and to sign up.    You can also contact math teacher Richard Schenke (whose wife Diane is Executive Director of The Park People) for more information.
