Q. What are school hours?
A. 8:30 AM - 3:40 PM
Q. Does Carnegie have traditional or block scheduling?
A. Traditional scheduling. There are seven periods per day, plus lunch. Each period, including lunch, lasts 50 minutes.
Q. Are there sports?
A. Carnegie Vanguard now has UIL baseball and UIL volleyball teams that compete in District 20 AAAAA. Students have also taken the lead in organizing girls and boys club soccer teams. The teams haved played a full schedule of games against primarily private schools every year since Carnegie was established. In addition to team sports, the school has one of the premier sand volleyball courts in HISD, as well as a basketball court, both of which host intramural competitions and lunch-time pick-up games. Other common student sports during lunch include Frisbee and hackey-sack.
Q. Can the students enter UIL competition?
A. Carnegie students compete in UIL academic competitions, such as Academic Challenge, Debate, Literary Competition, Computer Science, and have won district, regional, and state championships. Students wishing to participate in UIL sports can play for their geographic home school.
Q. Are uniforms required?
A. No. Considerable freedom and creativity of dress is allowed, within reasonable limitations based on appropriateness for school.
Q. Can students take college level courses?
A. Yes, many of our students take one or more courses at one of Houston's universities. Additionally, an extensive offering of advanced placement courses prepare students to take advanced placement tests to earn college credit.
Q. Is there any testing required for admission?
A. No testing is required for students already identified as G/T by HISD. Other students may require some testing.
