Upcoming Meetings about HISD Magnet Transportation Issues

This topic greatly affects the Carnegie Community. Please consider attending one of the upcoming meetings.

HISD will be hosting a series of community meetings in November and early December to gather input on the topic of transportation for Magnet students.

The meetings, which will all begin at 6:30 p.m., will be held on:

Tuesday, December 2: Waltrip High School (1900 W. 34th St.)
Wednesday, December 3: Madison High School (13719 Whiteheather)
Wednesday, December 3: DeBakey High School (3100 Shenandoah)
Thursday, December 4: Chavez High School (8501 Howard )
Monday, December 8: Austin High School (1700 Dumble)
Tuesday, December 9: Davis High School (1101 Quitman )
All interested community members are encouraged to make plans to attend.

Unless the Texas Legislature addresses the funding system in its next session, which begins in January 2009, HISD will receive the same funding next year that it did this year, while recurring costs such as utilities and property insurance continue to rise. As a result, HISD is reviewing its budget to identify areas where the district can save money while maintaining high-quality educational programs. One of the areas being explored is the cost of transporting Magnet students.

"HISD spends $26.4 million each year to bus all of its students to and from school," explained Superintendent of Schools Abelardo Saavedra. Magnet transportation alone accounts for 62 percent of the total, or $16.6 million. That means we spend more to transport Magnet students than we spend on Magnet programs ($15.04 million).

The superintendent hopes to make a recommendation to the Board of Education in December for a new Magnet transportation system, which would take effect in the 2009-2010 school year. "Magnet transportation will not be eliminated, but we must find a more efficient way to provide this service," said Dr. Saavedra.
