JSA Excels at Fall State convention

Carnegie students attended the JSA Fall State convention and it was great!
The huge attendance at the convention allowed Carnegie students to meet hundreds of other kids involved with Texas JSA.

The Carnegie students who attended went to an assortment of controversial debates, participated in various thought talks, and got a chance to take part in a mock-presidential candidate caucus.  Our own Noah P. did an excellent job acting as Democratic candidate Barack Obama. Noah also won a best speaker award for his debate on breathalyzer tests, along with fellow CVHS seniors Joshua C-S. (for his state tax debate) and Michael P. (for his debate on diplomatic relations with Venezuela). Other Carnegie debaters were Elliot K. (stem-cell research debate), Mari W. (universal healthcare debate), John L. (also universal healthcare), Stephen P. (Beijing Olympics), and several others who spoke subsequently in many of the weekend¹s debates.

During the first day of the convention, one of Carnegie¹s Quiz Bowl teams (made up of senior Anna J. and juniors John L. and Sanders B.) won first place in the Quiz Bowl Preliminaries. Sadly, the CVHS team came in second to St. John¹s during the finals‹but, at least we made it that far!  Mixed into all of the activity of the first day were the evening events, including a ³Mr. JSA² showdown and a dance. Following our fun night were more debates in the morning and a closing session on the House floor, featuring a speech by Texas JSA¹s Speaker of the House, our very own Joshua C-S. Then it was back to the vans and on the road again! All in all, the weekend was a huge success and everyone who went had a great time‹we¹re all excited for the next convention!
